A favorite tourist stop is the Pali Lookout on the Pali Highway. This tourist spot offers fantastic panoramic views of the Windward coast of Oahu.
Although the Pali Lookout is a well know tourist spot, what is not widely know is that the is a trail at the lower end of the lookout that you can take to get a different perspective on the views from the Pali. This trail follows along the route of the Old Pali Highway. There is a wide variety of plants along this trail and is worth a quick look.
History:
Kamehameha I who grew up as a child among men in Waipio Valley on the Island of Hawaii and earned the name "the lonely one", would rise to be the most glamorous figure in Hawaiian history. Not only did he unite the islands under one supreme rule, but he established himself as a fierce warrior and wise and compassionate leader to his people.
After several battles to gain power over the the Big Island, Kamehameha I recruited two
Englishmen, Young and Davies, to teach him " western Style " battle techniques. In 1795 he sailed from Hawaii with his army and conquered Maui, before landing on Oahu.
Kamehameha I then drove the defenders of Oahu up to the Nu‘uanu Pali and over its cliffs. Making the Na'uanu Pali the site of one of most important and bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history.
